A Singaporean ship chandler was killed Tuesday after falling into the water while disembarking from a bulk carrier at the Port of Singapore following a delivery.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) says that they received a report at about 2045 local time that a craft was sighted drifting and two men were in the water near the Eastern Bunkering Anchorage.
The MPA quickly coordinated a rescue with local police and were able to rescue the men about a half hour later. MPA says that one of the men was Master of a supply vessel working with a local ship chandler and was pulled from the water unharmed. The other man, the ship chandler, was found unconscious and later died at a nearby hospital.
According to the Master of the supply craft, the Singaporean ship chandler had fallen into the water while disembarking from bulk carrier M/V Cape Fushen after delivering supplies. The Master then put on a life jacket and went into the water to assist the man overboard.
MPA, local police and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) are investigating the incident.
